Sal Wood vs Teak vs Plywood vs MDF: What Actually Works in Kathmandu's Climate
Every customer who walks into our Boje Pokhari workshop eventually asks some version of the same question: should this be solid wood, or is plywood fine, or is MDF actually bad? The honest answer is that there is no single best material — there is a best material for a specific piece of furniture in a specific room of your specific house. A bed frame, a kitchen shutter and a TV console panel all face different stresses, and Kathmandu's climate adds its own twist that most generic furniture advice online never accounts for.
Kathmandu Valley has a genuinely tough combination for wood: four monsoon months of high humidity where boards can absorb moisture and swell, followed by a dry winter where the same boards shrink and can crack at joints if they were not seasoned properly to begin with. Add dust, the occasional leaking window during heavy Ashadh rain, and enthusiastic termites in older Lalitpur and Bhaktapur neighbourhoods, and you have a real stress test for any furniture material. This guide compares Sal wood, teak, plywood and MDF honestly, including where each one is a poor choice, so you can decide with your workshop rather than against generic marketing claims.
Sal wood: Nepal's dependable local hardwood
Sal is the most commonly used solid hardwood in Nepali furniture workshops, and for good reason — it grows locally, is genuinely dense and strong, and when properly kiln- or air-dried before use, resists warping far better than softer local timbers. It takes screws and joinery well, which matters for sofa frames, bed frames and dining tables that carry repeated everyday stress.
The catch is entirely in the drying process, not the wood itself. Sal that is cut and used while still carrying moisture will warp, twist or crack as it dries inside your heated or humid home over the following year. Always ask your furniture maker how long the timber was seasoned before it went into your piece — this single question separates furniture that lasts fifteen years from furniture that develops gaps within one monsoon cycle.
Teak: premium, stable, but not always necessary
Teak (often imported or sourced from managed plantations) has a natural oil content that gives it excellent resistance to moisture and insects, plus a fine, attractive grain that many people prefer for statement dining tables or study desks left in a natural or oiled finish. Teak generally moves less with seasonal humidity changes than most other timbers, which is genuinely valuable for large tabletops that would otherwise crack.
Teak is a premium material and using it for every part of a house — including hidden internal wardrobe shelving or kitchen carcasses where nobody will ever see the wood — is usually an unnecessary use of a resource better saved for visible, high-touch pieces like a dining table, a study desk, or an accent bed headboard.
Plywood, and why BWP grade matters in Nepal
Plywood is layers of thin wood veneer bonded under pressure with adhesive, and its performance depends almost entirely on the grade of that adhesive. BWP (Boiling Waterproof) grade plywood is bonded with a resin that survives prolonged water exposure and is the standard we insist on for kitchen carcasses, bathroom-adjacent cabinets, and any wardrobe base that sits near a window prone to monsoon seepage. BWR (Boiling Water Resistant) grade tolerates humidity and occasional splashing but is not meant for standing water — fine for general wardrobe and cabinet bodies in a normal bedroom.
Plywood also resists warping better than solid wood panels of the same size because the cross-layered grain direction cancels out expansion in any one direction — this is why most modern wardrobe and kitchen carcasses in Kathmandu are plywood rather than solid board, even in higher-end builds.
Where plywood does not belong
Very cheap plywood with commercial (non-waterproof) glue has no place in a Kathmandu kitchen or a wardrobe in a monsoon-facing room — it delaminates, meaning the layers separate, within a year or two of humidity exposure.
MDF: smooth finishes, but respect its limits
MDF (Medium-Density Fibreboard) is made of compressed wood fibres and resin, giving it an extremely smooth, uniform surface that is ideal for painted shutters, routed or grooved cabinet door designs, and modern matte or high-gloss laminate finishes that plywood's visible grain would spoil. It machines cleanly and holds paint far better than plywood.
MDF's weakness is straightforward: standard MDF absorbs water readily and swells permanently once soaked, and it does not recover its shape the way plywood sometimes can. It should never be used where it might sit in standing water — under a kitchen sink cabinet base, for instance — unless it is genuinely moisture-resistant (MR) grade MDF, and even then, keep it away from direct water contact. For visible shutters, wardrobe doors, and TV console fronts kept away from direct water sources, MDF is an excellent, cost-sensible option.
How monsoon humidity actually affects each material
During Ashadh-Shrawan monsoon months, relative humidity inside un-airconditioned Kathmandu homes climbs noticeably, and every hygroscopic material — meaning anything that absorbs moisture from the air — reacts. Solid wood expands across the grain and can stick doors and drawers shut temporarily; well-seasoned Sal and teak recover once the dry season returns, but poorly dried wood may crack as it later shrinks unevenly. Plywood expands and contracts far less thanks to its cross-grain construction. MDF is the most vulnerable to sustained humidity or direct leaks and, once swollen, generally does not return to its original dimension.
A practical takeaway: keep silica-gel style ventilation or small gaps in wardrobe backs, avoid pushing furniture flush against exterior walls that sweat during monsoon, and address any roof or window leak immediately rather than letting furniture absorb the moisture over weeks.
Matching material to furniture type
As a working rule in our own production: bed frames and dining tables that take direct daily mechanical stress do best in solid Sal or teak. Wardrobe and kitchen carcasses — the box structure, not the visible doors — do best in BWP or BWR plywood. Visible cabinet doors, TV units and modern shutter designs with paint or laminate finishes do well in MDF, provided they are kept clear of direct water sources. Mixing materials within one piece, using solid wood for legs and structural frames and engineered board for panels and doors, is standard practice and not a shortcut — it is simply matching the right material to the right job.
Cost factors, without the numbers
Rather than quote figures that vary with the market, it helps to understand what drives material cost. Solid teak generally sits at the premium end due to import and finishing work. Solid Sal is typically mid-range and cost-effective for structural framing given its local availability. Quality BWP plywood costs more than lower BWR or commercial grades because of the waterproof resin used. MDF is generally the most budget-friendly option for large flat panel areas, especially with a laminate or paint finish, but moisture-resistant MDF grades cost more than standard MDF. The finish (laminate, veneer, paint, oil) and the amount of custom detailing — grooves, mouldings, handle-less push systems — also affect cost independently of the base material.
