Buy direct
Why buy furniture direct from the workshop
Most furniture sold in Kathmandu passes through an importer, a distributor and a retail showroom. Each one adds margin, and none of them made the piece.
- No middleman markup — you pay the workshop price, typically 15–30% below retail for the same specification.
- Seasoned wood we buy and treat ourselves, air-dried then kiln-treated so it survives monsoon humidity and dry winters.
- Two-year joinery warranty, honoured by the same carpenters who built the piece.
- Custom sizing at no premium — your wall is 7ft 4in, so the wardrobe is 7ft 4in.
- Repairs and re-upholstery available years later, because the maker is still ten minutes away.
- Free measurement visit anywhere inside Kathmandu Valley before you commit.
Material comparison
Sal, teak, plywood or MDF — an honest comparison
There is no single best material. What matters is matching the material to the room, the use and your budget. Here is what we would tell you across the counter.
Sal wood
Value hardwood — ask for today's ratePros: Very hard and dense, locally available, excellent value, holds screws and joinery well.
Cons: Heavy to move, grain is plainer than teak, needs proper seasoning or it can check.
Best for: Bed frames, dining tables, sofa frames, almirahs.
Teak (Burma / Indian)
Premium tier — quoted on requestPros: Most stable wood in Nepal's humidity swings, natural oils resist insects, ages beautifully.
Cons: The most expensive option; imported grades vary, so buy from someone who shows you the stock.
Best for: Premium beds, dining sets, carved sofa frames, main doors.
Plywood (commercial & BWP)
Mid-range sheet material — quoted on requestPros: Dimensionally stable, ideal for wardrobe and kitchen carcasses, BWP grade handles wet zones.
Cons: Edges must be properly banded; low-grade ply with gaps in the core will sag over time.
Best for: Wardrobes, modular kitchens, TV units, office storage.
MDF / HDHMR
Value sheet material — quoted on requestPros: Perfectly smooth for Duco paint and membrane shutters, no grain telegraphing, lowest cost.
Cons: Swells permanently if water reaches the core — never right for sink cabinets or damp ground floors.
Best for: Painted shutters and decorative panels in dry, upper-floor rooms.
Timber rates move with the season and with the grade available in Nepal. The bands above are indicative — we confirm the exact rate when we quote your piece.

Customers
What valley customers say
“We ordered an L-shape sofa and a wardrobe for our flat in Imadol. The carpenter came to measure the same week and the sofa came up our narrow stairs in two parts, exactly as promised.”
“Got a full modular kitchen done before Dashain. Price was around 20% less than a showroom quote in Kathmandu for the same BWP ply and soft-close hardware.”
“They supplied 24 workstations for our office in Pulchowk on the date they committed. Two follow-up service visits were done without any charge.”
