A Furniture Workshop in Imadol, Lalitpur — Since 2007
Niraj Furniture began as a two-bench carpentry shop making beds and almirahs for neighbours around Boje Pokhari. Imadol was still mostly fields and brick kilns then. As Lalitpur grew southward, our neighbours' new houses needed wardrobes, kitchens and drawing-room sets — and we grew with the neighbourhood rather than moving away from it.
The craftsmen
Fourteen people work in the shop today. Our senior carpenters have been with us for over a decade, several trained in the Newar joinery tradition of Patan where a joint is cut to hold without depending on glue or bolts. Two dedicated upholsterers handle sofa work, and a separate finishing team does PU, melamine and Duco spraying in a curtained booth so dust does not settle into the coat.
That structure matters for quality control: the person cutting your wardrobe carcass is not the same person spraying it at 6pm in a hurry. And because the team is stable, a repair request three years later goes to someone who remembers the piece.
Boje Pokhari, Imadol — why we stayed
Boje Pokhari sits on the Imadol road between Gwarko and the Lalitpur ring of newer housing colonies. It is close enough to Kathmandu for same-day delivery to Baneshwor or Chabahil, and far enough out that we can run a real workshop with timber storage and a spray booth — something no showroom inside the city core can do.
Being local also means our warranty is worth something. If a sliding track jams in Satdobato or a sofa needs re-foaming in Kupondole, we are twenty minutes away with the original drawing on file.
Why locally made beats imported flat-pack in Nepal
Imported flat-pack furniture looks cheap on a screen. Then it arrives in Kathmandu after weeks in a container and a truck over the Terai.
- Particle board swells permanently once monsoon moisture reaches its core; our seasoned hardwood and BWP plywood does not.
- Cam-lock joints loosen after a year of assembly and reassembly — mortise-and-tenon joinery does not.
- Standard imported sizes waste the odd corners and non-standard ceiling heights of valley homes.
- Damaged panels from a container shipment take weeks to replace; ours are re-cut in a day.
- Customs duty, freight and importer margin all sit inside an imported price tag, not inside the furniture.
- Repairs, re-upholstery and matching additions stay possible for years because the maker is nearby.
