When to Order Wedding Furniture in Nepal: The Lagan Season Booking Timeline

For a complete matched daijo set — bed, wardrobe, dressing table, bedsides, and usually a sofa or dining set — place the order six to eight weeks before the lagan date. That gives roughly one week for measurement and drawing approval, three to four weeks of build, one week of finishing and curing, and a genuine buffer week before delivery.

For a single piece or two, three to four weeks is normally enough outside the peak months. Inside Mangsir or Magh-Falgun, add two weeks to whatever you think you need, because you are queued behind every other family in the Valley.

If the set includes hand-carved panels, plan on two to three additional weeks on top. Carving is skilled hand labour and cannot be compressed by putting more people on it.

Mangsir sits after the monsoon and after Dashain and Tihar, in dry, cool weather with a generous run of auspicious dates. It is the single busiest wedding window in Nepal, and it collides with the festival backlog — the workshop is already finishing Dashain and Tihar orders when Mangsir enquiries start arriving.

Magh and Falgun form the second wave, again with good weather and many dates, and again with a hard cluster: several hundred Valley weddings can fall on the same handful of days. Furniture is not the only thing that gets tight in those weeks — venues, cooks, tempo hire and labour all do — but furniture has the longest lead time of anything on the list, which is why it should be booked first, not last.

Practically, we start closing the Mangsir book around the end of Kartik and the Magh-Falgun book around the middle of Poush. Families who come to us in Bhadra or Ashwin for a Mangsir lagan get their pick of dates, better material choice, and unhurried finishing.

This is how we plan every wedding order. Take the lagan date and count backwards; every step below assumes the family answers questions within a day or two, which is the real variable in most delays.

In our experience delays are rarely about the workshop running out of hours. The three real causes are slow approvals, late changes, and access problems on delivery day.

Slow approvals: a drawing that sits for ten days waiting for an uncle to visit from Chitwan costs ten days of build time. Nominate one person in the family to approve on behalf of everyone.

Late changes: switching from a plain shutter to a carved one after the frames are cut restarts a stage. Changing fabric before cutting is free; changing it after stitching is not. Decide material, finish and hardware before we cut.

Access: narrow stairwells and tight landing turns in Valley apartments are extremely common. Tell us at measurement stage so the piece is built as a knock-down unit — planned upfront it costs nothing extra and adds no time, discovered on delivery day it can cost you the wedding morning.

We do take rush work, and we would rather tell you plainly what changes. Within roughly three weeks we can usually deliver a bed and a wardrobe in a standard size and a straightforward finish, or supply matched ready-stock pieces where they exist. What we will not promise inside three weeks is hand carving, a full multi-room set, a Duco or membrane painted finish that needs curing days, or a fully custom modular kitchen.

If your date is close, the most useful thing you can do is call rather than message, so we can look at the actual production queue with you and tell you the same hour what is feasible. If nothing custom fits the date, a smaller ready-stock set delivered properly finished is a far better outcome than a rushed custom set that is still tacky on the morning of the ceremony.

Dates do move — a panchanga revision, a bereavement in either family, or two families renegotiating. We hold finished furniture in the workshop at no charge for a reasonable period and redeliver on the new date; storage in our own building is one advantage of buying from the maker rather than from a warehouse-fed retailer.

If the date moves earlier, tell us the same day. There is usually something we can resequence within the first two weeks of a build; after finishing has started, there is very little.

The single most useful thing a family can do is register the lagan date with us early, even before the furniture list is settled. A date in our book reserves production capacity; the drawing, wood grade and fabric can be finalised in the following weeks.
